You take another ladder down, slip through a near-total tunnel collapse. You pass, for a brief period, a section of tunnel where the sewer wall has collapsed, revealing what's behind it. You can see that successive building campaigns have simply buried old surfaces rather than demolish them, showing you the strata of Absalom's history like rings in a tree. Low down, practically below the level of the floor, you can see fine dressed stonework with Vudran geometric inlay. Above that, cheaper, faster masonry in a mechanically precise style. Then a crude repair in crumbling brick, and at the top more modern sewer pipe of the kind you were walking through at the beginning. A ground-floor shop front (from the Age of Excess perhaps? A thousand years ago?) sticks out from the wall next to it, stone shelving still intact, a carving of a fish over the lintel advertising some ancient fishmonger.
